Qigong is a movement discipline emerging from Chinese medicine, martial arts and spirituality. Sometimes spelled Chi Kung and pronounced “Chee-GONG,” this discipline integrates breath, movement, and meditative visualisation. Integrating the breath with slow, deliberate movements and meditative visualisations can transform our experience of our bodies, develop unusual levels of awareness and personal power, and open the door to peak spiritual experiences. Through qigong practice we can integrate and focus our scattered attention and awareness, learning to make more effective, effortless and natural use of our bodies and minds.
Directly translated as “energy work” (qi + gong), qigong exercises develop deep intuitive understandings of body alignments, our relationship to gravity and the ground, and connection with—for want of a better word—the energies of the earth, nature, ourselves, other people, and in Chinese cosmology, the entire universe. We can practice qigong as a body skill to develop better alignment, posture, grace, power and flexibility; as a complementary health practice focused on bodily energy and proper alignment; and as a spiritual and meditative discipline stripping away layers of preconceived and habitual thought to experience a unified reality more directly.
